Lesson Plan Components

Here are the eight main components of a lesson plan:

1.   Objectives and Goals:  These are the things you would like for your students to accomplish as a result of your lesson.  Think about what you would like for the                      students to be able to do at the end of your lesson.

2.    Anticipatory Set:  This activity should provide motivation for and an introduction to your lesson.  It should focus your students' attention and get their minds thinking about the topic you are going to cover.

 3.   Direct Instruction:  This part of a lesson is where you, the teacher, shares information with the students.  This is the "meat" of your lesson and can be presented in a variety of ways.

 4.   Guided Practice:  During guided practice, students demonstrate what they have learned from your direct instruction.  As students work on an activity you have provided, you circulate and assist students in need.

5.   Closure:  At this point in your lesson, you are wrapping up.  Make sure your students understand the goals and objectives and provide a context for the new information they have learned.

 6.   Independent Practice:  You should provide some task or activity for students to complete without your guidance to reinforce the new skills and information they have learned.

 7.   Required Materials and Equipment:  Make a list of all the things you will need to teach your lesson.  Will you need handouts?  How many copies will you need?  A DVD player?  A smartboard or projector?  What supplies do you need for any hands-on activities?

8.    Assessment and Follow-Up:  You need to assess the final outcome of your lesson and to what extent the students have achieved the goals and objectives you had for the lesson.  You can use quizzes, tests, projects, oral discussions or any number of other means to assess learning.
